Stephen Matthews

English tenor Stephen Matthews is an internationally active singer of art songs, oratorios, and opera, and has performed in Europe, the United States, and East Asia. After studying music at St. John’s College in Cambridge, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in voice at the Mannheim State University of Music and Performing Arts under Prof. Timothy Sharp and Prof. Burkhard Fritz. Even while still a student, he sang major opera roles such as Tamino (The Magic Flute), Doktor Mirakel (Doktor Mirakel), Adolph von Reinthal (Die Opernprobe), and the Sailor (Dido and Aeneas), as well as demanding lieder cycles by Schumann and Britten. Master classes, scholarships from Live Music Now Rhein-Neckar and the Richard Wagner Association, as well as his work as a voice teacher, round out his profile. He made his solo debut at the Frankfurt Opera and has appeared in several world premieres at the National Theater Mannheim. A major focus of his concert activities is church music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, in which he regularly performs as the Evangelist and an aria soloist.

In 2026, he will perform with the KlangForum Heidelberg for the first time.
