Distant starry skies pass by us in the orchestra. Fascinated, we listen up and follow the imperceptible movements. Michael Pelzel contributes a new piece for vocal ensemble and percussion.

"Lontano" is one of those sound surface compositions from the 60s and 70s, with which the Hungarian György Ligeti brought a completely new color into New Music. Filigree polyphonic lines combine to form a harmonically rich swarm. The sound became a school. From there, composers like Georg Friedrich Haas moved further into the microtonal space. The starting point for "Joshua Tree" is the starry sky over the national park of the same name in Southern California. "When you look at the sky with the naked eye, you can't help but stare at groups of stars and make pictures of them. But when you hold a telescope, you see so many points of light that it is impossible to recognize structures. It's all about density and imperceptible movement. It is this phenomenon that I wanted to capture."

In between, the Klangforum Heidelberg, an innovative ensemble of voices and instruments, will perform a new composition by Michael Pelzel: "Luna" deals with the "constellation of humanity," the role of the human species in the cosmos.

An event by the Bern Music Festival in cooperation with Grosse Halle, Reitschule.
