How a stone disappears into the sea – Facets of Memory: 1968 Global – A Retrospective

"Come un sasso nell’ oceano…" is a passage from the famous prison letters of the Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci, in which he ponders whether it might not be better to sink like a stone into the sea, to disappear – from the sight of those who search for him on the shore and, through their searching, put themselves and others in danger. These lines have been set to music by the Italian composer Aureliano Cattaneo.


The finissage double concert for the exhibition Facets of Memory: 1968 Global – China and the World at the Heidelberg Museum of Ethnology brings these and other texts from the global ’68 movement to life through the reflections of composers from Italy, Japan, and Austria: the revolution in Mao’s poems, Beatles songs, and reports from the ’68 era. The double concert (beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Museum of Ethnology and continuing at 8:00 p.m. in the Alte Aula) serves as the finale to the exhibition by Chinese artists Ni Shaofeng and Deng Huaidong, whose works bear witness to the events of that era in China by critically reflecting, in a wide variety of ways and through the means of artistic alienation, on what is preserved in (official) memory, while other things fade into the fog of oblivion or disappear "like a stone in the sea."
