Louise Labé 500
Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI), Heidelberg
Veranstalter: DAI Heidelberg
Songs based on poems by Louise Labé and Viktor Ullmann, among others.
Born in Lyon 500 years ago, Louise Labé (1524–1566) is today regarded as one of the most significant French poets, not only of her time; she has inspired admiration from fellow poets such as Rainer Maria Rilke, and has repeatedly inspired composers to set her verses to music.
Particularly striking are the six sonnet settings by Viktor Ullmann (*1898, +Auschwitz 1944), composed in 1941 shortly before his deportation to Theresienstadt.
To mark her 500th birthday, Ralph Dutli reads poems by Louise Labé, Clément Marot, and Pierre de Ronsard, in his own translations and those by Rainer Maria Rilke and Paul Zech, alternating with musical settings by the composer Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944), who was murdered in Auschwitz, and Maurice Ravel (1875–1937).
