Luciano Berio engaged intensively with Gustav Mahler, particularly in the 1980s. He orchestrated five piano pieces, including texts from »Des Knaben Wunderhorn«. His new compositions, created using the resources of the modern orchestra, are not mere transcriptions but sonic reinterpretations.

»Blumine« is a serenade-like section from Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 that was originally conceived as the 2nd movement.

Berio's »Sinfonia« is considered a masterpiece of the 20th century: five movements for eight voices and orchestra that artfully intertwine tradition and contemporary music, much like Pop Art collages.
