Set against the backdrop of the tension between old and new, between grief, pain, and hope, is the opening of the 2025 Tyrol Easter Festival (featuring the Klangforum Heidelberg for the second time). The works span from the 16th to the 21st century, ranging from Cipriano de Rore and Orlando di Lasso to Domenico Scarlatti, Wolfgang Rihm, and Salvatore Sciarrino.
The two highlights are Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater, which holds a special place among his compositions due to its unique spatial arrangement and dramatic intensity. With impulsive sensuality, it depicts Mary’s suffering at the foot of the cross. Another unique experience is the Austrian premiere of Salvatore Sciarrino’s Due Cori. The Italian composer is one of the most important voices of the 20th and 21st centuries. In his latest work, he reflects on Aeschylus’s tragedy "Agamemnon" and, through Cassandra, depicts the transience of human fate.
Alongside these are Lagrime di San Pietro (The Tears of repentance of St. Peter), composed in the year of Di Lasso’s death, and "Mit geschlossenem Mund" (With a Closed Mouth), a tribute to Wolfgang Rihm, who passed away in 2024 – both masterpieces. Di Lasso’s music overflows with emotion and artistry, while Rihm engaged in a beautiful exploration of silence. The evening concludes with an appeal for peace by Cipriano de Rore.
